Penglai, bordering on the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, is situated in the northern end of Shandong Peninsula. The total area of the city is 1128.6 km2. The population is 445,000. There are 7 towns, 5 community offices, 1 provincial economic development zone and 1 provincial tourist area under her jurisdiction.
    Penglai boasts beautiful sceneries and a long history. She is a famous coastal tourist city as well as a famous historic & cultural city with deep cultural background and large quantities of cultural relics. There are Penglai Pavilion—one of the four most famous towers in ancient China, Water Fortress—the most complete ancient navy base currently existing nationwide, the Memorial Archway and Temple of the National Hero Qi Jiguang, unique marvelous mirage and the legend of “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea”. Penglai is well known as “the Fairyland on Earth” and listed as a national-level scenic spot, receiving 2.60 million tourists all over the world every year.
    Penglai is gifted with rich resources. As one of the Seven Grape Coasts in the world, Penglai is a main origin of high-quality grape and wine in China. It enjoys high reputation in grape plantation and wine processing. The grape plantation area is about 41,333 hectares with the annual production of wine more than 80,000 tons, accounting for 20% of the total domestic production. The production of dry wine ranks first in China and makes Penglai become one of the 10 concentrated agricultural clusters in Shandong Province. The aquatic cultivation is developed in Penglai. Penglai is rich in high-quality mineral resources and more than 20 kinds have been proven and mined, among which, gold and limestone are in large reserve and high quality. The total reserve of limestone is 200 million tons. The annual production of gold reaches 190,000 ounces, which ranks the 3rd in China. 39 nautical miles to the north of Penglai is PL19-3 Oilfield with the reserve over 600 million tons and huge development potential.
    Penglai is gifted with superior location and convenient transportation. There are 4 ports including 2 national 1st-class open ports: Penglai New Port and Luanjiakou Port. There are three 50,000-ton berths and six over 10,000-ton berths. The passenger-cargo ro/ro sea route has been opened to Lvshun and Dalian with the annual handling capacity of more than 10 million tons, which becomes the shortest “Golden Route” connecting the East of China and Northeast of China. Four high-standard national and provincial ways run across the city such as No.206 Expressway. It is 70km to Yantai Airport and Railway Station in the east and 200km to Qingdao Airport and Qingdao Port in the south. There is an airport in Penglai built by Shandong Aviation Company. De-Long-Yan Railway, which is under construction, runs across Penglai. Therefore, a sea-land-air transportation network has come into being.
